BOSTON (AP) — A Massachusetts man convicted of helping steal millions of dollars from hundreds of people in online romance scams, often regaling the victims with stories of oil rig explosions and foreign jails, has been sentenced to 4 1/2 years in prison.Kofi Osei, 30, and his alleged accomplices from 2016 to 2020 targeted mostly older people seeking companionship by creating fake online dating profiles, prosecutors said in a statement Tuesday.They gradually gained their victims’ trust before directing them to transfer money to one of dozens of bank accounts Osei opened using fake passports, aliases and phony business names, federal prosecutors said in a statement. (AP) — New Hampshire’s fallen Old Man of the Mountain would be honored annually under a bill passed by the House on Wednesday.The massive, naturally formed granite profile attracted tourists to Franconia Notch for about 200 years before it crumbled in 2003.The bipartisan bill, which now goes to the Senate, would designate “Old Man of the Mountain Day” on May 3 — the date the formation collapsed.The House passed the bill on a voice vote, although Rep. Tim Cahill, R-Raymond, elicited groans when he compared the rock formation’s collapse to the 9/11 terrorist attacks, which killed thousands of people.“The Old Man falling was akin to the twin towers for many in the Granite State and around the world,” he said.First noted by white settlers in 1805, the stone profile was named the official state symbol in 1945, attracting generations of tourists and appearing on the state quarter, highway signs and license plates.

New teaching kitchen opens at recently expanded MGH Revere Food Pantry

A new community kitchen opened its doors on the North Shore on Wednesday, mixing culinary education with healthy habits in Revere. The new teaching kitchen is being launched in partnership with Mass General Brigham in a recently expanded food pantry at the MGH Revere HealthCare Center.Mass General Brigham Community Health and Health Equity Officer Elise Tavaras said the kitchen is the first of its kind across the Mass General Brigham system.One of the kitchen’s goals is to make nutrition related illnesses a thing of the past by using the kitchen as an educational space.  Tavares said the kitchen aims to provide patients with “the opportunity to learn about healthy foods, to learn how to prepare them, to learn how to try different things that they might not have tried.”The food pantry opened back in 2019 to make sure families have access to healthy, plant-based food. Following its expansion, the pantry will be able to help 80 families in Revere every week. Of...

6-year-old boy killed in crash

SAN DIEGO -- A 6-year-old boy was killed after being trapped in a vehicle following a Wednesday morning crash, authorities said.The San Diego Fire-Rescue Department said a two-vehicle collision occurred shortly before 7:50 a.m. on Adams Avenue and Biona Drive in the Kensington neighborhood. SDFD reported one vehicle was on its side on top of a fire hydrant.As of 8:20 a.m., SDFD reported one patient was transported to a local children's hospital in critical condition. During a press conference around 10 a.m., the San Diego Police Department confirmed the boy had died from his injuries.Adams Avenue is expected to be closed from 42nd Street to Vista Street for several hours while authorities investigate the scene.This is a developing story.
